Pitfall #1: Using only one approach to source job opportunities. A job hunting method that banks on one way to find available jobs will produce limited or no results. Many approaches to sourcing open positions should be used including help-wanted ads, employment agencies, direct contact with employers, employee referrals, networking and others.

Pitfall #2: Spending too little time on the job search. If you are unemployed, your job search should be treated as your new full time job. Dedicate your free time to your future. Re-direct time spent on non-productive activities like watching TV, playing video or computer games or sleeping the day away to job hunting.

Pitfall #3: A poorly developed job search plan. Your job search plan should be very detailed with sequential steps. Each step should build on the one before and no detail is too small to be included. A poorly developed job search plan will lead to frustration and disappointment. Conceiving a plan for your job search will produce better results.

Pitfall #4: Lack of preparation and proper positioning. Having a resume and cover letter is not enough. You must conduct thorough research on companies with job openings, getting as much information as possible for use in a job interview. Additionally, your resume and cover letter should not be confusing or misleading, but should reflect who you are, your qualifications and experience.

Pitfall #5: Unwillingness to be flexible. It may take some getting used to, but you should be open minded and aware of non-traditional job opportunities such as temporary assignments or jobs in industries unrelated to where you have previous experience.

Pitfall #6: Lack of support and encouragement. Every job seeker needs support to follow-through on a job search plan. Find others who are job hunting and develop supporting relationships with them. Let people know you are looking for a job instead of isolating yourself at home. Connect with people who offer encouragement and stay away from those that are depressed or down all the time.

Pitfall #7: Lack of persistence. Studies have shown that persistent people who stick to their job search plan in spite of the obstacles are usually successful. Don’t procrastinate or be haphazard in your follow-through. Do what you say you will do as you tenaciously take the initiative to find a job.
